Mechanism of action

When absorbed by the leaves and stems of weeds, clethodim penetrates the plant, concentrates in the growing points and blocks lipid biosynthesis. In broadleaf plants, clethodim is incorporated into metabolism and inactivated. Clethodim destroys both the above-ground and underground (root) parts of grasses, preventing regrowth of perennial species. Owing to its selectivity, the product does not cause phytotoxicity in the broadleaf crops on which it is recommended for use. The action of clethodim on grass weeds appears on days 3–5 as leaf chlorosis and browning of the growing points; the plants die 7–21 days after treatment.
